Turns of Phrase for brass quintet (2010)

i    Taking Turns
ii    Turning Inward
iii    Turning Colors; Turning Back

14 minutes

Written for the Potsdam Brass Quintet, Turns of Phrase takes its inspiration from several English idioms that include the word "turn".  "Taking Turns" features a kind of hocket, preserving a constant rhythmic impetus while passing material from instrument to instrument.  "Turning Inward" is a quiet, introspective slow movement.  The opening of the third movement, "Turning Colors", explores the variety of colors available in the brass quintet through Klangfarbenmelodie, muting and other effects, and overtone reinforcement; "Turning Back" returns to material from the first movement.
