Three Folk Songs for mezzo-soprano, viola and piano (2010)
i Riddle Song
ii Old Joe Clark
iii Shenandoah
8-9 minutes
When circumstances required the late cancellation of a previously-planned work from a program of my vocal music, the need to replace that work quickly led me to adapt settings of three folk songs I’d previously arranged as accompaniment exercises for functional keyboard classes. The outer songs are relatively straightforward; the tradition of “Old Joe Clark” required some fiddlin’—here with a polytonal twist. These settings are dedicated to Lorraine Yaros Sullivan and Shelly Tramposh, the performers who stepped in on short notice for the premiere.
