I wrote the Sonata for my friend John Ellis. The second movement offers the choice of cup mute or flügelhorn; to my delight, John bought a new flügelhorn for the premiere of this piece. During my years at Eastman, I accompanied several trumpet players, and got to know much of the standard repertoire; the third movement includes a few shout-outs to some of those pieces.
