Sonata for piano (2012)
i Toccata à la Charleston
ii Gates
iii Summer Rambling
15 minutes
The Sonata was written during the summer of 2012. As is often the case with my multi-movement works, I wrote the last movement first. The title of the first movement reflects the syncopated Charleston accents that pervade the movement; the "Gates" of the second movement are both imagined grandiose gates (think "The Great Gate of Kiev") and the surprisingly serene Christo "Gates" installation in Central Park.
