Soldier 10 for violin with obbligato voices (2004)

In 2005, the Catholic University of America presented a series of four concerts with the theme "Waging Peace: Music in Time of War." One of the concerts featured a collaborative work titled Songs of the Forgotten War, coordinated by my friend Andrew Simpson. Nineteen composers with ties to the Washington area and/or Catholic University were commissioned to provide a one-minute work with instrumentation chosen from violin, cello, and piano, with a soprano, mezzo-soprano, and tenor also available. Each work was to be inspired by one of the nineteen statues of American soldiers at the Korean War Memorial. My contribution is a solo violin piece, alternately virtuosic and reflective. Since the singers were available, I thought it would make for an effective ending for them to come in with a soft vocalized chord under the final seconds of the piece.
