Kaona for clarinet and piano (2013)

9 minutes

My friend Raphael Sanders asked me to write him a piece that would showcase some of his particular talents.  When we talked about the project, the conversation ranged beyond musical issues to other things that were important to Raphael--in particular, his Hawaiian heritage.  The piece therefore weaves together material from a variety of Hawaiian sources:  traditional mele, the popular style most familiar to non-Hawaiian listeners, and the anthem Hawai'i Pono'i.  The word "kaona" means "hidden meaning".
