Concerto for Piano and Wind Ensemble (2008)
i Liberamente, senza misura; Allegro
ii Grave
iii Allegro
30 minutes
Written during a semester sabbatical in 2008, the Concerto was composed for pianist Kirk Severtson and the Crane Wind Ensemble, Brian Doyle, conductor. The first movement begins with an introduction that alternates invocatory solo wind passages (some of the soloists are dispersed to various parts of the performing space) with brusque piano interruptions. Eventually the piano joins the ensemble in the Allegro. The somber opening of the second movement gives way in turn to a lyric passage, aggressive, and serene passages, and the movement closes with a cadenza that recalls the piano interruptions of the first movement. The closing Allegro is a relatively short romp in 5/8.
