iii 3/29/02
iv 4/23/03
v 11/15/02
5-6 minutes
In the semesters when I teach a composition class for non-majors, one class meeting is set aside for a particular project: I provide the students with the first measure of a piece for solo piano, and they must complete a piece from that beginning by the end of the fifty-minute class period. Additionally, the handwritten piece must fit on the single sheet of staff paper I provide them. I also complete the exercise each time. Afternoon Quickies comprises several of my completions. The titles of each movement are simply the dates of composition. When I perform the piece, I add an additional improvised movement at the end.
